Look around - there are many examples of ordinary people doing an extraordinary business online. Some of them have advanced degrees; others no more than a high-school education.

It is said that the internet is the great equalizer, and I know that it is true - at least when it comes to running a profitable online business. It's just amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it.

I just finished reading another sales copy ending with the Deadline Marketing!

And it's the sixth I see today saying "If you order by midnight, blah blah blah...."

I'm sure you've seen it. And I'm sure you're getting (if not very) a little bored.

The deadline trick has proven itself to be overwhelmingly successful. It's a deadly-effective "countdown trigger" that pushes reluctant people to ACT at the scene.

BUT right now the Internet is getting OVERCROWDED with sales letters that try to lure you in with the deadlines.

And now what happens is when prospects get to witness this technique too often, they learn to catch up. They learn NOT to buy it!

So be "extra careful". It's been OVERUSED!! Imagine how your prospects will feel when they come across your website and see that your sales copy is not different from others. Imagine yourself in their shoes!

What's WORSE is not keeping the deadlines...

A lot of marketers specifically use the deadlines to explode their sales faster. And their sales letters are forever like that....with the NEVER-ending deadlines. So prospects can't help but lose faith in the deadlines.

You could easily risk losing your credibility from your prospects, if they check up on your site again and still find the same "midnight deadline" technique.

This is critical. If you use the deadline, make sure you keep it. When you say the promotion is ending as soon as the clock "strikes at twelve", prove that you really MEAN it!

Once your prospects see that the discount really ends like you said it would, they'll regret not having bought from you earlier.

Now that they know you always keep your word, they'll keep in mind not to let the next opportunity slip away. Next time they won't wait for another second to buy from you!

You want to quit? You want to be labeled a failure? Think again!

I hear about so many people that give up on so many things before they even give it a fair chance. Why did they even start? Did they research to see how long it would take for their project to blossom? Most likely they did not.

Let me tell you a short story. Many, many years ago, a friend with whom I had gone to High School told me this story. After graduating, he went immediately into the U.S. Marines. I, on the other hand enlisted in the U.S. Navy. I knew I was going to Viet Nam and I wanted at least a little bit of control over what happened to me. Anyway, around his fifth week at Parris Island during bootcamp he wanted to quit. He went to his Senior Drill Instructor and to his face he said he wanted to go home. What the DI said and did during the next 5 minutes changed my friend. Well the entire 3 months of bootcamp changed him. No Kidding! Seriously though, He told Mike that he was not giving up on him cause he had more potential than anyone he had seen and he was going to forget they had even had that conversation. He refused to let Mike quit. Mike thought afterwards, "Why had I given up, no one else had given up on me."

Mike gave up because he was looking at the now (the pain, the homesick). You know, all the negative things. Had he quit he would have missed out on so much in life. He traveled to 7 different countries. His college was paid for. He gets many benefits as a veteran now, etc.

The same applies to your Online Business. We look at the now and quit. You think that no one is paying attention to what you have done so you quit. The website is shutdown and, consequently, the advertising you did. The people you thought were not paying attention come to your site for your products and services and you are gone. The money you could have made, you now will not make. The extra time you could have spent with your family and on vacations will not happen. The financial freedom, being your own boss (what I call true freedom) will never be. Why? Because you quit way too early.

You say, "Well I have not made any money in six months! What am I suppose to do?" The answer ... Before you started you should have researched to see what kind of demand there was for your business. Set a schedule up for your business and stick to it. (ex. follow a daily schedule and set aside 1 hour for emails, 2 hours for advertising, etc.) The Internet is full of easy tools for building websites and you can find people that will help you. You have got to continue to advertise, build up an opt-in list. These people will become your support, your customers and some may become your business partners through Joint Ventures. If you have done everything possible and still are not getting any sales, I would say take a close look at what you're doing and see what is wrong. There may be nothing wrong. It could just be your market and you should try looking into some other niche. You don't have to quite!

If you don't quit, keep looking for your perfect niche, than you will enjoy success on the internet and I challenge each of you to do this. In my time researching the search engines, I've noticed something rather strange. Literally millions of searches are made each month for "brand names" and actual site names. For example, on Overture alone, last month, there were millions of queries made for the term "internet explorer". Having been on the internet for around seven years (running sites for over five), I've naturally assumed that people use it the same way I do. So, I know that internet explorer is a Microsoft product so I just type http://www.microsoft.com into my browser.

Apparently, that's not what everyone does. Here are some other examples from Overture: eBay - over 7 million searches, Google - over 9 million searches, Amazon - Over 800 thousand searches (OK, lots will be for the river or the forest but still ...), PayPal over 340 thousand searches and so on. Considering that Overture has only about 5% of the search engine market, you can see that there are millions and millions of people who actually use search engines to find sites when they could just type the name in their browser and slap a .com on the end.

Now, on to the good stuff. Of those companies that I mentioned, all but Google have an affiliate program. For example, PayPal pays $5.00 for every person who signs up. 340 000 x $5.00= $1 700 000. Interesting!

So, what can we do to make the most of this opportunity? Well, it's easier than you would think. Obviously, trying to get traffic from people searching for eBay or PayPal would be very difficult but there are literally thousands of other companies that people search for. For example, I just checked the three best known British sports betting companies - about 20 000 searches are made each month on Overture for these companies.

I have noticed that without any effort whatsoever, I am actually getting a lot of traffic from people searching for company names and script names. This is because they are listed in my Affiliate and Script directories. An example of the process is - people search for a particular merchant, come to my affiliate directory and click on the link to get to the merchant. Therefore, even though they have no interest in the affiliate program, I'm making money just by linking to merchants who's content is completely unrelated to mine.

Remember, this is without even trying. When I do try, I'm getting even more traffic. For example, I have a review of the FastClick ad network on my site. I get 10+ visitors each day from people searching for phrases that include the word fastclick. That's 300+ visitors per month, 15 000 per year. As you could imagine, due to the fact that FastClick pay a lifetime 5% commission on referred earnings, this is quite lucrative.

So, what do you need to do? Well, you probably already use affiliate programs in some form on your site - either as a major source of revenue or to make "backend" sales. I went for years just linking to them with banners, buttons and text links. The odd short recommendation here and there proved to be the best way to get the most out of them.

The problem, from a search engine perspective, is that just linking to them from your site will generally not get your page up high in the search engine rankings. A link to merchant "Acme Corp." just blends in to the text on your page and is assigned no real relevance. Therefore, you should put up an individual page on your site for each merchant that you are an affiliate of. This page could just be a review of the products or services that they offer.

Just the fact that you have a content rich page about a specific merchant will almost automatically get you traffic from the search engines (once you are listed). The main point is "content rich". Also, write it yourself, do not copy content from the merchants site. Why? Well, even if they let you copy their content (lots do), Google has ways of finding duplicate content. In fact, they will usually ban the page that they believe is less important if two have the same information on them. So, write it yourself.

Remember that if the merchant sells products that have gained recognition from the public, make sure you list their products.

If you already have a successful site, the search engines will actually view your "review" of a merchant as being important and it is no harder to get that page in to the top 10 listings than it is for any other page on your site.

Often, the difference between doing well and being truly successful online is just the ability to grab opportunities when they appear. You could find that spending just 10 minutes to set up a couple of new pages on your site could actually result in thousands of dollars in extra income each year.

Remember, there are close to 600 million queries made on search engines each day - this is an opportunity! Don't let it pass you by.

Your autoresponders can also be used to successfully promote your ezine by delivering sample issues of your ezine to your visitors, or you could use your autoresponders to create an archive of all your past issues.

In addition your autoresponders can be used to effectively get more subscribers to your publication by delivering a bonus for subscribing to your publication such as an email course or multipart report.

2. Swap ads with other ezine publishers.

Swapping ads can be time consuming to set up but can prove to be well worth the effort as you will be able to get very targeted promotion of your ezine at no cost to you.

To get the best results from your ad swaps try to swap ads for at least 3 issues in a row as repetition will increase the number of subscribers you get.

Also track your ad swaps so that you will be able to tell exactly which ezines give you the best response and which ad copy gives you the best results.

3. Swap "thank you" page ads with other ezine publishers.

Use the page your subscribers are taken to after subscribing to your ezine to advertise other ezines in exchange for those ezines doing the same for you.

This can provide you with profitable ongoing promotion of your ezine for as long as the other ezines continue to be published.

When picking ezines to swap with, select ezines that offer related, complimentary content but not ezines that compete directly with you.

4. Swap welcome message ads with other ezine publishers.

This works much in the same way as swapping "thank you" page ads. The main difference is that not everyone that subscribes to your ezine will read your welcome email.

However, this type of swap is much easier to set up with other ezine publishers than a "thank you" page swap and will still provide you with good, long term promotion of your ezine.

5. Swap recommendations with other ezine publishers.

Swapping recommendations with another ezine publisher who has the trust and respect of her subscribers can be very effective in increasing your subscriptions.

Keeping this in mind, be careful when choosing ezines to recommend. Make sure they are ezines that you can honestly vouch for because recommending an ezine that isn't up to par can cost you the trust of your subscribers.

To create your recommendation swap, you could recommend the other publisher's ezine in your own words while she does the same for you.

In addition, you could create a recommended ezine section, if you have several other ezines you would like to swap recommendations with.

6. Write articles.

You could write "how to" articles that show your readers step by step how to do something, or you could write articles that provide your readers with a valuable list of tips.

You can also write articles that focus on a current hot topic, or you could conduct interviews and provide these to your subscribers as highly informative articles.

In addition, to helping you to increase your subscribers' trust in you, your articles can also help you to get more subscriptions to your publication.

Add a resource box to your articles that advertises your ezine and then submit your articles to other ezine publishers, article announcement lists, and to article directories.

Also post your articles on your site and let your visitors (as well as your subscribers within your ezine) know that they can reprint your articles in their ezines or on their websites.

7. Swap articles with other ezine publishers.

You could swap an article that you have available for reprint in other ezines while publishing an article that the other publisher has available for reprint in other ezines.

This can provide both of you with excellent promotion of your ezines, but runs the risk of lowering the value of your content if that publisher's article is published in lots of other ezines.

To get around this, you could create a swap where you write an article to run exclusively in another publisher's ezine while that publisher writes an article to be published exclusively in your ezine.

This will help you to successfully gain more subscribers while providing your subscribers with content that can't be found anywhere else.

In addition, you can create an article swap where both you and the other publisher exchange articles that will be first run in each other's publications and afterwards allowed to be reprinted in other ezines, on websites, etc.

Advertising Your Business On A Budget - A Small Budget. 29

From early on in my online career I realised that the fastest way to internet riches was to find a marketing concept that brought me profits and plough as much as I could into that resource, thus building my business and capital as I went.

For those just beginning in home business marketing it would be prudent to start off with a very small investment (I started with around $50) and try to build from there. I have spent money on most of what the web has to offer in terms of marketing and can now enlighten you on what to buy and what not to touch with a 10-foot pole.

FFAs or Free For All link pages were once a useful free resource and could have provided at least a few hits per day given the right ad. Today using the free version of these pages is all but useless and in my humble opinion a total waste of time. The vast majority of people submitting to these sites today are using automated submission software so human eyes WILL never see your ad and as far as I know Automatons (Robots to some people) DO NOT buy products;-)

Paid or free safelists from my experience are just not worth the effort involved. The very fact that everyone posting to a safelist is not interested in the subject matter but in selling their own products gives us some idea on the ineffectiveness of this method. Couple this with the time spent sorting through emails mostly for deletion you really could spend your time in more worthwhile marketing ventures.

Moving up the ladder of effectiveness we have banner advertising. From my experience the best banner I was able to design brought me in a maximum of 2.8% click through rate and from what I hear this is a GREAT %. Most banners will only pull a 1% CTR. If you can find a company selling banner advertising cheap enough to bring you into the profit zone then certainly give it a bash. Please remember though to track all your banner ads otherwise you will not know whether you are getting massive click throughs or none at all.

If you are going to post to classified sites then opt for the free version. There is some good classified submission software out there and may be worth the investment. Again ALWAYS TRACK YOUR ADS.

Renting an email list is a good option and can bring you many hits to your product or affiliate site. Make sure that the list is optin only, meaning the people have requested to see your ad. There are many good reputable companies out there and if you are willing to pay sometimes high fees to rent a list, this can be a profitable venture.

Search engine submission is definitely a worthwhile project and considering a good listing will bring you daily and continuing free traffic I suggest you spend a bit of time perfecting this method. I use software to automate my submissions and prepare my pages for submission. This cuts down in hours of work and I would certainly recommend any budding business owners to get a copy.

Some businesses pay for a listing to Yahoo's directory. At $299 per year this may sound very expensive to some but the traffic some claim to have gotten from this listing paid for the submission within a short period of time.

Ezine advertising is by far the best form of advertising and more importantly is reasonably priced. From my own experience a solo or top spot ad are the most effective and will return more visitors for the price.

A word of WARNING before closing this article: If you want to keep your business and your reputation intact then NEVER EVER use bulk email advertising. It just isn't worth the risk. The hassle that you will get from sending out unsolicited email to 1000s of untargeted prospects will bring your business down in the long run. There are enough forms of advertising listed here to keep you going for a long time. Don't waste your time on unproductive and senseless SPAMMING.

So, you've spent hundreds of thousands on a state-of-the-art website. Your client is happy, and your hard work has paid off. The site goes live and the telesales team is standing by for a flood of inquiries. Nothing happens. Why?

It is easy to forget that the key aim of any web marketer is to attract visitors. They must not only bring in the visitors, but also keep them there, and encourage them to return on a regular basis. It doesn't matter how good your site is, if nobody visits!

There are many myths surrounding the art of traffic generation, often created by unscrupulous web marketers who claim they can 'double your site traffic for just $99 per month' or 'submit your site to 1000 search engines and watch your traffic grow'. Such bogus claims should be ignored if you are serious about traffic.

In reality, building site traffic is far simpler than you may think, and inexpensive. In fact, you can build a sizeable community for your site at no great cost.

From initial web page design to traffic generation, there are several key stages which should be followed to attract visitors to your site. We have expanded on each of these topics in articles on http://www.trafficgeneration.com

Configuration of your web pages

Time spent configuring the code in each of your web pages prior to search engine submission will pay dividends in the long run. Not only should the META TAGS in each page be optimised for each key search engine, but care an attention should be paid to the ratio of 'keywords' to page content, and the use of 'ALT' and 'Header' tags for example. Search engines use complex algorithms to determine how high your pages should rank for the keywords you specify in the underlying code. Good code configuration will lead to good traffic.

Submission to search engines and indexes

Just concentrate on these key sites (most importantly, Google), and submit to the smaller sites if you have time.

Reciprocal links / Link Popularity

Not only will links to your site from others increase your ranking on some search engines, but also they will ensure a constant stream of targetted traffic to your site. You want the right visitors for your product or service, not random visitors. It is worth exchanging links with sites with a similar theme to your own. You won't lose traffic, if your exchanged links are bringing the same amount (or more) back to your own site. More importantly however, Google measures your site's "link popularity" (the number of sites which link to yours) to determine its page ranking, so effort in this area is essential. The more relevant these links are to the content of your own site offering, the better. Also ensure your site is well linked together, since internal links also count towards your site's Google Pagerank.

Maintaining your traffic

Traffic building is not a one off process. It is a permanent activity. Search engines may drop your pages when they re-index (which happens periodically), or may not index your pages at all during busy times. Search engine submission should be an ongoing activity, with each page resubmitted on a monthly basis, as a general guideline. If your pages do not rank highly first time, you will need to revisit the source code in under performing pages, and resubmit.

These initial steps deal with the physical process of initial traffic generation. Following these steps will bring you visitors, then it is up to you to keep them coming back for more. Good site content, structure and positioning are key to building a lasting web community.

Everybody wants to make more money... In fact, most people would like to hit upon something that makes them fabulously rich! And seemingly, one of the easiest roads to the fulfillment of these dreams of wealth is writing effective solo ads and using them correctly

The only thing is, hardly anyone gives much real thought to the basic ingredient of selling by email - the writing of profitable solo ads. If your online business is to succeed, then you must acquire the expertise of writing solo ads that sell your product or services!

So what makes a solo ad good or bad? First of all, it must appeal to the reader, and as such, it must say exactly what you want it to say. Secondly, it has to say what it says in the least possible number of words in order to keep your operating costs within your budget. And thirdly, it has to produce the desired results whether inquiries or sales.

Grabbing the reader's attention is your first objective. You must assume the reader is "scanning" the page on which your ad appears in the company of two or three hundred solo ads. Therefore, there has to be something about your ad that causes them to stop scanning and look at yours! So, the first two or three words of your ad are of the utmost importance and deserve your careful consideration. Most surveys show that words or phrases that quickly involve the reader, tend to be the best attention-grabbers. Such words as: FREE... WIN... MAKE BIG MONEY...

Whatever words you use as attention-grabbers, to start your ads, you should bear in mind that they'll be competing with similar attention-grabbers of the other ads on the same page. Therefore, in addition to your lead words, your ad must quickly go on to promise or state further benefits to the reader.

In the language of professional copywriters, you've grabbed the attention of your prospect, and interested them with something that even they can do.

The next rule of good solo ad copywriting has to do with the arousal of the reader's desire to get in on your offer. In a great many instances, this rule is by-passed, and it appears, this is the real reason that an ad doesn't pull according to the expectations of the advertiser.

Think about it - you've got your reader's attention; you've told them it's easy and simple; and you're about to ask them to do something. Unless you take the time to further "want your offer," your ad is going to only half turn them on. they'll compare your ad with the others that have grabbed their attention and finally decide upon the one that interests them the most.

What I'm saying is that here is the place for you to insert that magic word "guaranteed" or some other such word or phrase. So now, we've got an ad that reads: MAKE BIG MONEY! Easy & Simple. Guaranteed!

Now the reader is turned on, and in their mind, can't lose. You're ready to ask for their money. This is the "demand for action" part of your ad. This is the part where you want to use such words as:

Limited offer - Act now! Write today! Only and/or just... Putting it all together, then your ad might read something like this: MAKE BIG MONEY! Easy & Simple. Guaranteed! Limited offer. Send $l to:

These are the ingredients of any good solo ad - Attention - Interest - Desire - Action... Without these four ingredients skillfully integrated into your ad, chances are your ad will just "lie there" and not do anything but cost you money. What i have just shown you is a basic solo ad. Although such an ad could be placed in any leading publication and would pull a good response, it's known as a "blind ad" and would pull inquiries and responses from a whole spectrum of people reading the publication in which it appeared. In other words, from as many "time-wasters" as from bona fide buyers.

To give you an example of the kind of solo ad you might want to use, say to sell a report such as this one... Using all the rules of basic advertising copywriting, and stating exactly what our product is, our ad reads thusly:

MONEY-MAKER'S SECRETS! How To Write winning solo ads. Simple & easy to learn -should double or triple your responses. Rush $1 to BC Sales, 10 Main Anytown, va 75001.

The point i am making is that:

1. You've got to grab the reader's attention...

2. You've got to "interest them" with something that appeals to them...

3. You've got to "further stimulate" him with something (catch-phrase) that makes them "desire" the product or service...

4. Demand that he act immediately...

There's no point in being tricky or clever. Just adhere to the basics and your profits will increase accordingly. One of the best ways of learning to write good solo ads is to study the other solo ads out there - try to figure out exactly what they're attempting to sell - and then practice rewriting them according to the rules I've just given you. Whenever you sit down to write a solo ad, always write it all out - write down everything you want to say - and then go back over it, crossing out words, and refining your phraseology.

Generally speaking, readers respond more often to solo ads that include a name than to those showing just initials or an address only. However, because advertising costs are based upon the number of words, or the amount of space your solo ad uses, the use of some names in solo ads could become quite expensive. If I were to ask our ad respondents to write to or send their money to The Research Writers & Publishers Association, or to Book Business Mart, or even to Money Maker's Opportunity Digest, my advertising costs would be prohibitive. Thus we shorten our name Researchers or Money-Makers. The point here is to think relative to the placement costs of your solo ad, and to shorten excessively long names.

The important thing is to know the rules of profitable solo ad writing, and to follow them. Hold your costs in line. once your solo ad is written, now is the time to use it wisely know the basics...grab their attention... the rest is up to you.

A Good Title Could Mean More Traffic To Your Site. 23

There's such a thing as taking search engine optimization too far. I'm not talking about black hat versus white hat, things that might get you banned versus staying pristine. I'm talking about keyword stuffing in the title. As far as search engine optimization goes, there's nothing wrong with it. You might very well make it to #1 with a title like "Widgets, Black Widgets, Home Widgets, Cheap Widgets."

But who's going to click on that?

Oh, I'm sure some people will. But I'm betting the guy who's at #3 with "Widget Information" is going to get more visitors.

Sometimes we webmasters spend so much time trying to second-guess the search engines that we forget potential visitors, people, are the ones we really need to impress. Yes, it's important to get onto that first page of search engine results, but once you're there, think of ways to entice people with your titles.

I'm not saying to get rid of keywords in your titles altogether; instead, take your main keyword and work your title around it.

So, what makes a good title?

First off, get rid of the mass of keywords separated by commas. If people were looking for synonyms, they'd grab a thesaurus rather than popping onto Google. Instead, put yourself in the shoes of the person looking for information on widgets. If you were the one doing the looking, what kind of title would attract you?

You really can't go wrong with Keyword Information or some variation of that title. After all, that's what most people are looking for, information. However, that can be a bit dry.

You may want to consider employing what writers call a hook. This is something that grabs your attention and makes you want to continue reading in order to satisfy your curiosity. Journalists employ this method all the time to increase newspaper sales.

Be creative. Whatever you do, make sure your titles are cohesive. Think like your visitors, not like the search engines. If you want to build a solid reputation on the web, then having your own product is the best way to go. When most people develop their own product, they tend to favor an ebook over software.

Why?

A couple of reasons, one is, ebooks are a lot easier to develop, then software. Another reason why ebooks are so popular is, because they cost next to nothing to start up and maintain. The profit margin of an ebook is extremely high, compared to software, anywhere up to 95% is profit.

On the other hand, with software your profit margin is not nearly as high as an ebook. Unless you know how to develop your own software, developing costs will be at a minimal. You probably don't know how to develop software, so the chances of having to hire a software developer is high, and can be very costly too.

Moreover, it takes time to write and publish your own ebook. You need to write, go through the lengthy editing process, and publish it. Then, you will select a certain amount of time for the professionals in that field to place their bid on your project.

These are some of the popular methods that people use to create their own products. Just make sure you do your research before you think about developing a product. You don't want to develop a product that no one wants, you will not be happy with your results.

Pennies saved in your home business can turn into dollars at the end of the day, and dollars can quickly multiply into hundreds or thousands of dollars over time.

Doubt me if you will, but let me ask you a question. Do you think a savings of two fifths of a penny could make any real difference in the profit margin of a home business? Of course the right answer is "it depends on how many transactions are done in a year, utilizing the savings of two fifths of one penny."

The incredible thing about Mr. Hughes decision is that by saving his customers an extra one fifth of one cent per can, he managed to take more market share away from his competition --- netting his company an additional and substantial portion of the total market share in the canning industry.

Let us return our thoughts to your home business. Have you ever gotten the feeling of excitement --- when you read something or thought of something --- that you could not wait to implement this new idea? This could be one of those moments...

The third step will be to determine how you will get traffic. You have a few choices in this regard and below I have detailed six sources of traffic that you can use for your site. As with the income ingredients above, top marketers use all of them.

1. Search engine optimisation (SEO). SEO is the art of getting free traffic by being listed highly in search engines. if you can get on the first page at Google for a popular search term then you'll get traffic and plenty of it. The process can be slow but is certainly worthwhile.

2. Paid advertising. Most popularly this would be pay per click advertising through Adwords or Overture or one of the many other pay per click search engines. But it could be pay for inclusion, banner advertising or sponsor ads in E-zines.

3. Free advertising. The best way to get free advertising other than your search engine listings is to write articles. Articles like this one your reading will be added to other people's websites and can be submitted to article directories. Everywhere your article is placed there will also be a link to your site.

4. Affiliates. If you have a product then you should operate your own affiliate programme. That way others can promote your product in return for a commission and in order to do that they will have to send their visitors to your site.

5. Joint ventures. A joint venture is like a customised affiliate arrangement whereby another site owner promotes your product to their list or on their site in return for commission. A joint venture differs from an affiliate offer in that it will be a custom or personalised arrangement negotiated between the parties.

6. Repeat visits. The two main ways of getting repeat visits to your site are to have interesting content or to invite people to return via a newsletter or other email that you send to previous visitors. You will of course need to have a reason for these visitors to return. Which brings us back to fresh content, but it could be a special offer or bonus. Obviously in order to send an e-mail you need to collect the visitors email address the first time that they visit your site.

These then are your basic ingredients. What you need is the right recipe that mixes them all up into the perfect business for you.

Get More Traffic To Your Site Through Web Design Directories 3

”How can I get more hits?”, “I need leads!” These thoughts run through web designers heads all the time. How can a web designer get their services in front of people who are actually looking for web design services? The answer is the web design directory.

What is a Web Design Directory?

These directories are specifically designed to bring together web designers and showcase their work on one site. The people who visit these sites are actively looking for web design services, thus they are all potential clients. Some of the directories categorize sites by either state, county and/or web specialization. This is a grand advantage because it allows you to hit your target market more efficiently than if you were to submit your site to just a general business directory. What’s even better is that most of these sites are absolutely free to post your link.

Finding Web Design Directories

Well where the heck do I find these directories? Your best route would be to log on to Google.com, type in the key phrase “web design directory” and you’ll bring up a ton of listings. Sift through them and decide which ones you feel will help your web site get hits. And just as an aside even if the site doesn’t get you hits it will help you with your search engine ranking. So it’s a win-win situation. Try several different search engines with that same key phrase or any alternatives you can come up with and submit to your heart’s desire.

What do I have to do to get listed?

Some directories will ask for a reciprocal link, which is not much to ask given the amount of new traffic your site will draw in as a result of being listed. I know as a designer you may fear that adding someone’s banner, icon or slogan to your site will look tacky or even make you seem like a novice. The majority will not ask you for a banner, none of the sites listed here do, but if they do it’s up to you as a designer to make that decision. This was a concern for me at first but I figured out a way to get around this.

Most of the link confirmations are automated so no one will physically look at your site, so adding just a text link will do the trick. Once the link is confirmed it’s automatically approved and listed on the site. This way they have their link and your have your listing. Everyone is happy. I haven’t had any complaints yet so reciprocal links can work for you as a designer. The only other challenge is finding a tasteful way to present the links on your site. The way I handle it is by creating an “affiliates” link on my contact page. That way it’s embedded in the site. The user has to go to a separate page specifically set up just to display reciprocal links. There’s no need to disrupt the aesthetic value of your site by placing a link on your homepage.

Submission Must Do’s and Tips

Here are a few things you should prepare before you start submission frenzy. You will want to have the site title, URL, description, keywords and contact information ready in a word processing program so all you have to do is cut and paste into the online form. It will make the process a million times faster if you have the information ready because while you’re submitting it will be requested time and again. In addition to your regular description you may want to have a truncated version just in case the site doesn’t accommodate lengthy descriptions.

Another tip for submittal is to submit your own domain name link like www.yoursite.com, not www.somebodyshost.com/yoursite. Your link may be rejected and not to mention it’s unprofessional. Also keep in mind that some of the submissions may take a while. Anywhere from instantaneously to a couple of months so don’t get antsy when you don’t see your link after a week. However, if you feel it’s taking too long to see your link on their site feel free to email the administrator and inquire about when they think the link will be up. After all you’re generating business for them by having their link on your site. It’s only fair. If you don’t get the response you want or no response at all feel free to delete the link from your “affiliates” page and make room for a reciprocal link that is going to bring you potential clients.
